I picked this up because the premise genuinely excited me pre-Viking Norse raiders, Celtic mythology, a warrior caught between two worlds and within the first few chapters I knew this was something special. Lann Dàn is the kind of historical fantasy that makes you feel like you are breathing different air while you read it. Breanna Ban Morna is an outstanding protagonist. The duality at the heart of her character Norse blood, Gaelic soul, a destiny she never chose and a father she despises creates a tension that runs through every single scene she occupies. She is fierce without being invincible and that balance makes every challenge she faces feel genuinely uncertain and genuinely earned. The mythology is where Raquepau truly shines. The Tuatha Dé Danann feel ancient and real and appropriately vast in a way that so much Celtic fantasy fails to capture. Danu's intervention feels momentous without stripping Breanna of her own agency the gods need her as much as she needs them and that mutual dependence gives the divine elements real narrative weight. The quest for the Lann Dàn itself is masterfully paced. Each step forward reveals another layer of the world and another dimension of Breanna's character and the stakes never once feel abstract because the land she is fighting for is rendered with such vividness and love that you feel its worth on every page. Brutal, beautiful and mythologically rich. An absolute standout in the genre.
