What do Valkyries do in Norse mythology?

Valkyries choose which slain warriors are taken from the battlefield after death. In Norse tradition, half of the honored dead go to Freyja while the other half go to Odin, revealing Freyja’s authority as a claimant of the fallen alongside the All-Father himself.
